On December 2, Todd Kashdan will discuss his recently launched book, The Upside of your Darkside: Why Being Your Whole Self – Not Just Your “Good” Self – Drives Success and Fulfillment, which he co-authored with Robert Biswas-Diener. The event will be held at Busboys and Poets in Arlington at 6:30 pm and is co-sponsored by the Center for Advancement of Well-Being and Positive Business DC.

The Upside of your Darkside exposes some of the flaws in modern thinking about how to live a fulfilling life, highlighting that some of our moments of negative emotion can be very meaningful moments. The book discusses what you can do in response to these feelings and how to pursue what matters most, despite the presence of pain.

“Robert, my co-author, and I wrote this book to offer a counterpoint to the public obsession with happiness. Negative emotions are a part of life and can not be shut off like switch,” explained Kashdan, “nor are they a sign of weakness. Robert and I wanted to share our research on utilizing these emotions so that people can realize how to harness their dark side emotions.”

Todd Kashdan, serial author, is a professor at George Mason University in the Department of Psychology and senior scientist for the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being. His co-author, Robert Biswas-Diener, is also a serial author, professional trainer, and a researcher with more than 50 publications in peer journals.

“Many people think positive psychology is just about feeling happy, but that is not the case. It’s about well-being and negative emotion is part of life. Negative emotion actually is telling us something about our situation and needs to be honored,” said Shannon Polly, co-founder of Positive Business DC. “We are excited to showcase an expanded view and think this should make for a lively discussion.”

The event is free and will be held at 6:30 pm on December 2, 2014 at Busboys and Poets, 4251 Campbell Ave, Arlington, Virginia 22206. Kashdan will be available after the discussion to sign books.
