Jarvis Grant will present the photographic exhibit, Citizens We, highlighted by an Artist Talk by E. Ethelbert Miller
Jarvis Grant’s Citizens We project stops and holds up our pictures. It encourages us to ask questions about who we are during these days of gentrification and deep transformation.
At a time when we see our communities changing, it is critical to define what is a community.
This opens the door to a discussion about what it means to be a citizen.
JARVIS GRANT | Photographer
At first, I thought my challenge as photographer was gaining access to communities. Then I realized that I belonged to several communities. I have membership in the community of my apartment building, the neighborhood supermarket and drugstore, my health clinic, artists, educators, students, family and friends. In each of these communities there is a fusion of involvement, interaction and commitment within its membership. How marvelous it would be to photograph these diverse people? As I encounter this diversity, I begin to pay attention to how these communities interact with each other. Each has their hierarchy, their unofficial insiders and outsiders, along with having official and unofficial alliances with other communities.
With this preliminary exploration of the faces and places, a story unfolds, revealing the heart of the community.
