Food, social, and environmental justice _ these are
a few of the ideas that speak to the better world we strive for. An
internationally recognized food writer and culinary historian, Michael
W. Twitty promotes an extension of these concepts in his notion of
?culinary justice?: the idea that historically oppressed peoples
should be recognized for their contribution to national and global
food traditions and have the opportunity to prosper from this
knowledge.
Michael?s work focuses on African American
food and folk culture. He is a living history interpreter and chef,
one of few experts of his craft: the re-construction of early
Southern cuisine as prepared by enslaved African American cooks.
Michael has developed a unique art form that explores the
intersections of history, justice, and _ most importantly _ food.
His art provides insights and perspective on how culinary justice
can further cultural understanding, wellness, and community
building.
Michael has been profiled in numerous
publications, including the New York Times, Ebony, and the
Huffington Post. His work has been included in a number of volumes
on culinary history, and in 2013 he made several TV appearances.
