🔥 Join us for a high-energy poetry slam where words take center stage! 🔥 Whether it's bold storytelling, social commentary, or personal reflection, this slam is your chance to witness powerful performances and be moved by the voices of talented poets.

About the Event

The 4th Saturday Slam Series (special edition!) brings an electrifying night of competitive performance poetry. This midweek slam is packed with raw emotion, powerful storytelling, and the kind of energy that only spoken word can deliver!

Prepare for two rounds of dynamic poetry as amateurs and professionals go head-to-head for the audience’s favor. The stakes? A $100 CASH PRIZE – winner takes all!

What to Expect

🍽️ Full food and bar service available throughout the night.
🎤 A chance to experience spoken word at its finest.
🔥 A night of storytelling, rhythm, and raw emotion.

Slam Rules

  • Each poem must be the poet’s original work.
  • Poets have 3 minutes 30 seconds (plus a 10-second grace period) to perform. Time starts as soon as the poet speaks or interacts with the audience.
  • Points will be deducted for exceeding the time limit.
  • No props, costumes, or musical instruments (this includes removing clothing).
  • Poems must be performed solo.
  • Poets can read from paper or electronic devices but cannot use them as props.
  • 6 competitors will be eliminated after the 1st round, leaving the best to battle it out in the final round!

Host: MALACHI BYRD

You won’t get five minutes into a conversation with Malachi Byrd, without hearing about Washington, D.C. An author, teacher, songwriter, and arts advocate from the district, Malachi believes superpowers exist in creative writing. An African-American Studies graduate from Princeton University, MalPractice gets his name from his commitment to mastering his crafts, and staying ready so he never has to get ready. If you follow performing arts in D.C., you’ve probably seen Practice rapping, laughing, and hugging everyone in the room. He often asks, art is made of healing properties, so why not use them?
