Arts organization fuses the passion of poetry with the drama of opera at a venue rich with visual stimulation during National Poetry Month to benefit African American classical musicians.
(April 13, 2016) One does not readily think of poetry and opera on the same stage, but on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Busboys and Poets, 5331 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, Maryland, the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) will “Bring Color to the Classics” by presenting “Paintings, Poetry, Puccini and Pasta” from 7:00 pm to 9:00pm. Patrons will enjoy pasta by Busboy chefs, paintings by a renowned local visual artist, performances by African American classical musicians including tenor Keith Craig, soprano Michelle Gutrick, and violinist Alexander Strachan performing works by Puccini, and poetry by Sistah Joy, who also serves as the Mistress of Ceremonies with Narration of the classical pieces by Pamela Simonson.
A cash bar offers the organization’s signature cocktail “Opera-tini” but is complimentary with a purchase of a VIP ticket. Partnered with Busboys and Poets, Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council, The LINKS, Inc., and Maryland State Arts Council for the business casual attire event, a portion of the ticket purchased will benefit African American classical musicians, scholarship, and others in the performing arts.
