Description:

The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion series is hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action! Each month there is a new topic for discussion.

This month's topic:

Say It Loud: The Changing Vernacular of Social Justice

Join us for a discussion on the evolving vocabulary and language being created on the streets and in social media by today's young activists on the front lines of the continuing war against racism.

Black Lives Matter, #OscarsSoWhite, "microaggressions", renaming buildings and defining public spaces i.e. campuses as "safe" or "sacred" spaces. This language is all around us and having an enormous impact, influence and creating surprising results.

Our panel of educators, journalists and writers will take a look at the cultural /linguistic impact of the new language and activism they have helped to create.

Panelists:

Soraya Nadia McDonald Senior Writer on culture for ESPN's The Undefeated website and previously covered arts, entertainment, and culture for The Washington Post

Wesley Lowery National Reporter for The Washington Post and part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team of reporters that authored "Fatal Force" a study of police shootings in America in 2016.

Derrick Weston Brown Renowned Poet, Author, and Teacher

Deborah Menkart Executive Director of Teaching for Change, a non-profit organization with the mission to build social justice starting in the classroom

Moderated by acclaimed Author and Activist, Marita Golden - President Emeritus, Hurston/Wright Foundation.

As middlemen between the movement and those seeking information about it, writers, journalists educators and cultural workers have played a crucial role in creating and disseminating what the public knows and think they know about the most significant social movement of the 21st century.

The panel will discuss among other topics, the impact of BLM on their professional lives and personal attitudes, the importance and challenges of social media in the movement and how they view their responsibility in writing, teaching and talking about the movement.

Free and open to all.

A.C.T.O.R. is held on the first Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14th & V from 5:00 PM-7:00pm.
