"How Do People Living in Poverty Work Toward Peace?"
Every day, around the world, people living in poverty work for peace in often unseen ways. Joining in this struggle has been the mission of the International Movement ATD Fourth World for more than 50 years.
Speakers:
- Laudan Aron-Turnham, senior researcher at the Urban Institute
- Diana Skelton, Deputy Director General of ATD Fourth World
- Mark Bergel, founder of A Wider Circle
- Jennifer Lentfer, Oxfam America's Senior Writer on Aid Effectiveness
This discussion will present Skelton's new book: Artisans of Peace Overcoming Poverty, Stereotypes about people in poverty being violent have been reinforced even by people as well-meaning as Bill Clinton. When he says, "Global poverty is a powder keg that could be ignited by our indifference,” the implication is that if poverty is not addressed, the poor will rise up to guillotine their oppressors. What no one sees is the many ways that people in poverty reach out to others: mothers in Guatemala daring to challenge gang members to change their behavior; young men in Haiti taking risks to seek out earthquake victims in the "no-go zone" where foreign aid was banned. This book introduces some of these people, sharing what drives each of them to make the choice to stand for social justice, whether or not they were born into poverty.
