Description:

ACTOR (A Continuing Talk on Race) presents: Advancing the Promise

What can you do to promote your child's success? Award-winning documentary American Promise filmmakers Michele Stephenson and Joe Brewster introduce actions that can reduce the impact of race on your child's educational future. Discovered through their son's journey along with speaking to experts on the achievement gap, they share innovative and often counterintuitive solutions. Aided by short clips from the film, their discussion will include a special signing of their book, Promises Kept: Raising Black Boys to Succeed in School and in Life.

The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion series is produced and hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action! Each month there is a new topic for discussion with a Busboys and Poets-sponsored facilitator.

Co-Sponsored by Urban Alliance.

Urban Alliance is the leading non-profit organization providing internships and job skills training to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Chicago, and Northern Virginia high school students from under-resourced communities. Urban Alliance was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1996 and over its 18-year history, it has worked with over 15,000 low-income D.C., Chicago and Baltimore youth through a combination of paid internships and curriculum outreach.

Hosted by Nafisa Isa, Program Innovations Specialist at Busboys. Have ideas for possible A.C.T.O.R. topics? E-mail Nafisa at nafisa@busboysandpoets.com.

Free and open to all. To be added to the A.C.T.O.R. email list, please email press@busboysandpoets.com.

A.C.T.O.R. is held on the first Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14th & V; 5:00 PM.
