Join us for a discussion about
how the civil rights movement of the 20th
continues to shape our definition
of ?civil rights? today. Our featured speaker: Robert
Patterson, will discuss his book:
Exodus Politics: Civil Rights and Leadership in African
American Literature and Culture
(Publisher: University of Virginia Press, November 29,
2013)
Patterson explores the ways in which the political strategies
and ideologies of this movement paradoxically undermined the
collective enfranchisement of black people.
He argues that by narrowly conceptualizing civil rights in only
racial terms and relying solely on a male figure, conventional
African American leadership, though frequently
redemptive, can also erode the
very goals of civil rights.

The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion
series is produced and
hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides
the
opportunity for people to come
together and speak openly and honestly about
issues of race. The intent is
that each person walks away from the discussion
feeling something: challenged,
educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed,
reassured and hopefully inspired
and moved to action!
This series is produced and
facilitated by our Marketing and Events Director, Pamela Pinnock.
