Description:

Much of what we know of North Korea comes from foreign correspondents on tightly controlled tours of Pyongyang and the odd visits?underline odd?by the likes of Dennis Rodman. To say that that North Korea remains a riddle wrapped up in an enigma is a screaming understatement. Richard Stone, international news editor at Science magazine, is one of the few journalists to have glimpsed life behind the Kim Dynasty?s iron curtain. In five trips there and back, he has reported on little-known stories such as the rumblings of the Mt. Paektu volcano and the struggle to contain multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Rich can?t tell you whether Uncle Jang was in fact fed to the dogs in the latest purge, but he will gladly share gripping tales from his adventures in one of the least understood places in the world.

Now in its third year, DC Science Caf_ is brought to you with support from DC Science Writers Association and encouragement from Busboys and Poets.
