Description:

This month Bread & Roses presents:

Tracing Our Food: Connecting the Dots in our (Preferred) Food Supply Chain

Join us for a discussion about the importance of building alternative sustainable food supply chains and the promise of union co-ops. Our discussion will feature a presentation by Dennis Olson, Senior Research Associate and Policy Analyst at United Food & Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW).

R. Dennis Olson  is a Senior Research Associate and Policy Analyst in the Food Processing, Packing & Manufacturing Division of the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union in Washington, D.C. where he works on labor, agricultural and trade issues.    He assisted UFCW Local 75 in launching the  Our Harvest Co-op  in Cincinnati,   and is working to duplicate the  Our Harvest  union co-op template with other UFCW locals.    Olson co-authored a 2010 UFCW report,  Ending Walmart?s Rural Stranglehold,  which argued for an investigation into Walmart?s unprecedented growth in the retail grocery sector, and made recommendations for stronger antitrust laws to curtail monopsony (buyer) power abuse in food supply chains.    Previously, Olson worked for the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy in Minneapolis.    From 1985 through 2002, he was a community organizer in Montana and North Dakota where he mobilized farmers, ranchers and conservationists on agriculture, antitrust, trade and natural resource extraction issues.

Bread & Roses is a monthly labor series that features a variety of events focused on workers and organized labor. Each month brings a new topic through interactive discussions, film screenings, and performances. The hope for these events is that attendees walk away with a greater understanding of organized labor, its role in shaping history and current relevance. The name "Bread & Roses" was inspired by a poem/song written by James Oppenheim that appeals for both fair wages and dignified conditions.

Bread & Roses is held on the first Tuesday of every month at Busboys and Poets 5th & K.
