Description:

A Busboys and Poetry Event. The 11th Hour Poetry Slam offers an opportunity for poetry lovers to enjoy the competitive art of late-night performance poetry! Enjoy two rounds of high intensity poetry, with the audience choosing a winner. Join us for an alternative way to spend your Friday night.

The IWPS FINALS SLAM SPECIAL featuring Award Winning Educator, Writer & Spoken Word Artist Rage Almighty from Dallas, TX! Join us for this Specialty Slam, featuring an incredible battle of words, wits, and heart, between the 2019 DC Grand Slam Champion and three other top ranked competitors from the IWPS qualifying slam.

This will be a 4 round cumulative slam in this order:

4 minute round, 1 minute round, 2 minute round, and 3 minute round.

This will prove to be an epic battle, as the winner of this event will go on to the 2019 individual World Poetry Slam (IWPS) as the Beltway Poetry Slam representative for the D.C. Metro Region. IWPS will be from September 24th – 27th in San Diego, CA for prestigious prizes and major awards.

DC SCORES Director of Writing Charity Blackwell is a spoken word artist, host, emcee, and poetry specialist. A Trinity University graduate, she received her B.A and M.A. in Communications. Charity’s natural stage presence and charm have earned her hosting accolades, at events including Poetry SLAMS for DC SCORES (2013-2016), the America SCORES New York National Poetry SLAM! (2015 -2016), Busboys and Poets Open Mics (2016-Current), the Our Words Our City Poetry Showcase (2017), the Women’s March Open Mic (2017), and many more. She has performed original work on international networks including the BBC and throughout the East Coast. She is currently working on her first book of poems.

FEATURING: RAGE ALMIGHTY

Poet, performance artist, actor, and activist Rage Almighty was born in Boston and currently lives in Dallas, Texas. He is known for his electrifying live performances, which blend rap, poetry, and standup. Almighty is also a youth advocate and leads workshops focusing on emotional literacy and destigmatizing mental illness in communities of color: in 2016, the organization Louder Than a Bomb named him Teaching Artist of the Year.

Almighty has received numerous honors and awards for his work on the slam circuit, including the 2017 Bayou City Poetry Slam Champion, the 2014 National Poetry Award for Best Spoken Word Album, and the 2014 North Texas Spoken Word Award for Poet of the Year. He was runner-up at the 2016 Individual World Poetry Slam Championships and the 2013 Dallas Grand Slam Champion, and he represented the United States at the World Cup Poetry Slam in Paris. An opening act for musical artists such as T.I., Dead Prez, Chrisette Michele, and Brand Nubian as well as poets Saul Williams and Nikki Giovanni, he also appeared on season 4 of Lexus Verses and Flow.

$5 Cover. On the day of the event, tickets can be purchased online starting at midnight and in the restaurant starting at 10:00 AM in the bookstore (cash only). No refunds. Ticket purchase limit of 4 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door if available. Guests must have their wristbands (tickets) on upon entering the event.  

Seating is available on a first come, first seated basis. No saved or reserved seats are allowed. Failure to check in within 30 minutes of advertised start time may result in forfeiture of seats. Sorry, no refunds.
