A Busboys and Poets event hosted this week by Alexa Patrick

Alexa Patrick is a singer and poet from Connecticut. She is a graduate of American University, where she studied Psychology, African-American and African Diaspora Studies, and Spanish. Alexa is a Cave Canem Fellow, and holds teaching positions through Split This Rock, The University of the District of Columbia, and the Center for Creative Youth at Wesleyan University. She is the current head coach of the award-winning DC Youth Slam Team, and has also coached the slam teams of American University and George Washington University for the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational. You may find Alexa's work published in CRWN Magazine and The BreakBeat Poets Vol. 2: Black Girl Magic.

FEATURING: RYAN SHEPPARD

Ryan Shepard is a 23 year-old New Jersey native from a small town called North Plainfield. He began writing poetry at the age of 13 and hasn't looked back since. During his high school years, he began to perform publicly more often and extended his craft from the page to the stage. Through the the gift of poetry, he had the opportunity to perform for Steve Harvey, Yolanda Adams and many others before the age of 18. After graduating from high school, he moved down to American University where he joined the school's Speak Fresh poetry group. As a member of Speak Fresh, he had the opportunity to learn and grow around the incredible Pages Matam, talented Alexa Patrick and many others. Over the years, he and his teammates have performed at several Busboys & Poets locations, Spit Dat, CUPSI and a number of other venues and showcases. Outside of poetry, Ryan continues to write as a Desk Assistant for ABC News and Culture Editor for Def Pen.

For two hours, audiences can expect a diverse chorus of voices, and a vast array of professional spoken word performers, open mic rookies, musicians and a different host every week. Expect to be moved, expect a packed house, expect the unexpected, but above all come with an open mind and ear.

$5 cover. Wristbands are available for purchase online at midnight and in the restaurant starting at 10:00 AM (cash only). No refunds. Ticket purchase limit of 4 per person. Guests must have their wristbands (tickets) on upon entering the event.

Seating is available on a first come, first seated basis. No saved or reserved seats are allowed. Failure to check in within 30 minutes of advertised start time may result in forfeiture of seats.
