A Busboys and Poets event hosted this week by Morgan Butler

Morgan “Momo da Mermaid” Butler is a witchy writer, educator, and interdisciplinary atist from Washington, D.C. Her work primarily focuses on cultivating healing spaces for femmes of color in white/masc/het-dominated spaces, specifically through creative writing and radical healing. A 2018 Loft Literary Center Spoken Word Immersion Fellow, she has performed for TedxFoggyBottom, TV One’s Verses and Flow and has been welcomed into spaces at The White House, The Kennedy Center and the National Museum of African-American History and Culture. As an educator, she has led two workshops at Harvard University’s Alumni of Color Conference and has taught sessions on peace education and creative writing throughout the D.C, Maryland, Virginia area. Momo identifies as a queer, genderfluid femme, with she/they pronouns.

Featuring: Chin-Yer

Chin-yer, the director of the Maya Baraka Writers Institute, is a multi-award winning poet, fiction writer, essayist, and creative writing teacher. She has been featured in various literary journals and magazines. Her poetry has also been highlighted on Fox 45 news. Chin-yer has been a main stage feature performer for Baltimore Book Festival, The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore Soundstage, Ramshead Live, Powerplant Live, African-American Festival and more in addition to being a featured artist at countless poetry, art, and literary venues including Organic Soul Tuesdays, Warm Wednesdays, Be Free Fridays, The Art of Conversation, Poets for Dinner, Enoch Pratt library and Slammageddon. Ms. Wright is a two-time recipient of the prestigious New Voices prize; awarded to a writer who "demonstrates an understanding of craft, distinct literary vision, and voice". She holds a degree in Literature and Language Arts and is currently completing her Masters degree in Creative Writing at Morgan State University and completing a creative writing program at UCLA. Chin-yer is also the founder and director of the 'The Baltimore Scene' arts movement which has curated over 50 literary and art events over the last twelve years including the largest and most reputable competitive poetry event on the East Coast, "Word War". As a teaching artist, Chin-yer is the primary writing coach of two National poets including DC National Slam team and Cupsi member soul and Baltimore's Youth Poet Laureate Lovey and serves as poetry mother and mentor for Baltimore's Youth Slam Poetry Team as well as writing instructor for innumerable Baltimore youth in city schools. Chin-yer is the author of the poetry book "Black Fairy Tales" which was received rave reviews and feedback from the literary community as well as from public readers.

For two hours, audiences can expect a diverse chorus of voices and a vast array of professional spoken word performers, open mic rookies, musicians and a different host every week. Expect to be moved, expect a packed house, expect the unexpected, but above all come with an open mind and ear.

$5 Cover. No refunds. Ticket purchase limit of 4 per person. Guests must have their wristbands (tickets) on upon entering the event.

Seating is available on a first come, first seated basis. No saved or reserved seats are allowed. Failure to check in within 30 minutes of advertised start time may result in a forfeiture of seats.
