Busboys & Poets and PEN America are proud to present the Prison Justice Write-In at Busboys & Poets Takoma. Participants will be given the opportunity to read and respond to writing from PEN America’s Writers in Prison Program. Come join us to write, read and discussion prison reform. Prisons are designed to be isolating, and communication from the outside world can help prisoners feel like they are connecting with people and reminds them that they are not alone. Whether this is your first letter or one of many, participants can sit together and help one another craft meaningful letters to incarcerated family members, friends and community members. Those who don't wish to write are also welcome to come and read original work by the talented artists involved in the Prison Writing Program and discuss prison reform and the importance of art as self-expression. Guidelines for writing letters to prisoners will be provided.Â
This event is co-sponsored by Voices Unbarred, a prison theatre organization giving individuals who are incarcerated a platform to perform and have their voices heard. They will be providing access to the latest play completed by their group, offering participants a chance to share what they learned from reading the play directly with its creators. Come join us to write, read and discuss prison reform.
