Description:

Please join Busboys and Poets Books as we welcome Dalia F. Fahmy and Daanish Faruqi and the Center for Global Policy to 5th and K.

In their latest book, Egypt and the Contradictions of Liberalism, Dalia F. Fahmy and Daanish Faruqi investigate the about-face of a critical mass of prominent Egyptian liberal activists and intelligentsia, who despite spending full careers pursuing progressive reform under Mubarak ultimately came to support the counterrevolutionary forces that culminated in the military coup of July 2013. Joined by moderator Dr. Shadi Hamid (contributing writer for The Atlantic, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution), Fahmy and Faruqi will spending the evening piecing together the Egyptian liberals’ systematic failure, at its institutional, ideological, and philosophical levels. In concluding that the liberal experiment in Egypt is beset by inherent contradictions that make the results of 2013 less than fully surprising, they will move on to rethink how to resuscitate liberalism in Egypt in light of its most recent setbacks. Their discussion will thus carry key stakes not only for Egypt, but the status of globalized liberalism more broadly – particularly in the age of Trump, and the liberal reaction to it. Come join for a scintillating discussion.

Dr. Dalia Fahmy is Associate Professor of Political Science at Long Island University where she teachers courses on US foreign Policy, World Politics, International Relations, Military and Defense Policy, Causes of War, and Politics of the Middle East. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Policy in Washington DC.
Dr. Fahmy's three books: “The Rise and Fall of The Muslim Brotherhood and the Future of Political Islam” (forthcoming), “Illiberal Intelligentsia and the Future of Egyptian Democracy” co-edited with Daanish Faruqi, and “International Relations in a Changing World” with Rhodes and DiCicco, cover her research areas. Dr. Fahmy has published several articles in academic journals focusing on democratization and most recently on the affects of Islamophobia on US foreign policy. She has been interviewed by and written editorials in various media outlets including ABC, CBC, CNBC, CNN, MSNBC, the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, and appears often on Aljazeera.

Daanish Faruqi is currently a visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights (CGHR) at Rutgers University. He is also a Middle East advisor for Duco Experts. A former Fulbright scholar to Morocco, he has over five combined years experience living in the MENA region as a researcher and journalist, the results of which gave rise to two books: Egypt and the Contradictions of Liberalism: Illiberal Intelligentsia and the Future of Egyptian Democracy(Oneworld Publications) (co-edited with Dalia Fahmy), and From Camp David to Cast Lead: Essays on Israel, Palestine, and the Future of the Peace Process(Lexington Books). Presently he is based in Morocco, where his fieldwork focuses on the Syrian revolution, and the role of transnational Sufi rebel groups in giving rise to the uprising. A recognized expert of Islam and the MENA region, Faruqi is a sought after public speaker, and regularly writes commentary on the politics of the Middle East for major media outlets including Al Jazeera English, CommonDreams.org, USC-Annenberg/Religion Dispatches, and others. He is presently a Ph.D. candidate (ABD) in Islamic History at Duke University.

His first book Temptations of Power: Islamists and Illiberal Democracy in a New Middle East was named a Foreign Affairs Best Book of 2014. An expert on Islam and politics, Hamid served as director of research at the Brookings Doha Center until January 2014.
