Description:

Join HumanitiesDC (HDC) for a lively discussion on what many call the new community radio ecosystem – podcasting – free audio shows delivered on demand over the Internet. Ever since the 2014 smash hit, Serial, the true story of a murdered Maryland high school student, podcasting has become a powerful storytelling tool. About a quarter of all Americans listen to podcasts a month, fueled by smartphones and mobile devices. We’ll explore the Washington DC landscape of podcasting from the big players like public radio to the local independents standing up to the giants and finding success without rules. Go behind-the-scenes to talk with some of DC’s storytellers about how they work. Learn about trending podcasts, how to discover new audio content and how you can podcast about your passions at low cost.

Meet the Panelists:

Michael O’Connell is the senior digital editor at FederalNewsRadio.com. During his time at Federal News Radio, Michael co-created two weekly podcasts; It’s All Journalism and Studio Y, which helped him to become an expert in podcasting. Besides speaking about podcasting at various journalism conferences, Michael is also the author of the textbook, Turn Up the Volume — A Down and Dirty Guide to Podcasting. He also taught the first podcasting course in the American University School of Communication’s Master’s in Digital Storytelling program.

Alicia Montgomery is Senior Supervising Editor/Producer of NPR’s Morning Edition. She was supervising director for Code Switch, the groundbreaking NPR podcast that explored how race and culture collide with everything else in our lives. She also served as lead editor of the news-talk program, Tell Me More, hosted by Michel Martin and was an Editorial Director at WAMU-FM. She spent two years reporting for Salon.com, covering the 2000 presidential race and its aftermath. There, Montgomery created Trail Mix, one of the first daily political blogs. She has been published in The New York Times Magazine, and the NAACP periodical The Crisis.

Mary Nichols (a.k.a. DJ Fusion) is a DJ/Radio Host, Podcaster, Writer and Speaker with a passion for both independent and mainstream music of the African diaspora. While at Rutgers University in 1998, she founded the syndicated Fuse Box Radio Broadcast, with a focus on the Black Music/Urban Music Genre. Today, she and her co-host do a weekly radio show and podcast to bring the Balance Back to Black Radio by having a strong focus on bringing a diverse mix of independent and mainstream Black Music, commentary and interviews to the listening world. She has a passion for making sure diverse voices get heard in podcasting and independent media at large. She grew up in Prince George County, Maryland and got her early hip-hop fix from listening to local radio stations and saving up money to purchase music.

Meet the Moderator:

She worked as an on-air television and radio news anchor, reporter, editorialist and producer for stations around the country. She is the author of a textbook ancillary on television reporting as well as numerous media publications.

What is a Humanitini?

A public program of HumanitiesDC, the National Endowment for the Humanities nonprofit state affilate for the District of Columbia, Humanitini is an exciting happy hour event where Washington's movers, shakers, and creators come together to think and drink. It is a place for you to engage with your peers, meet your neighbors, and speak with experts about what makes our city a unique place to live and play.
