"Should We Sell Out?" The Future of Labor and Capital in Public Service, a lecture and conversation about the tensions of public service, organizing, and public-private partnerships.
"Should We Sell Out?" confronts the title question through two lenses: individual and institutional. There is a growing crisis facing young people drawn to public service careers, but who struggle to reconcile questions of financial stability and institutional impact. On the other hand, "Should We Sell Out" is not just individual, but a question of public governance: governments are increasingly reliant on consulting firms and private capital to achieve their strategic and financial goals.
Through a look in (we're working on the case studies so it might be edited) involving privatized transit systems, and the influence of teacher’s unions in negotiations with venture-backed education tech companies, "Should We Sell Out?" examines how the line between public service and private capital is blurring, but also the possibilities and radical imagination of self-sustained economies, public goods, and institutions of mutual aid.
