This month's topic:Â A History of Resistance at Howard University
From the 1968 protests and the demonstrations in 1989, to the recent sit in by students from HU RESIST, Howard University has been a hotbed for activism and dissension. We will be discussing the short film "Color Us Black!" about the 1968 student demonstration as well as the legacy of activism at Howard University. We will answer the questions, what sparked those demonstrations 50 years ago and 29 years ago? What are some of the similarities of Howard Student Activism, then and now? What circumstances exist today that call for civil disobedience by student activists?
Special Guests include:
Filmmaker Tony Gittens-Director of the DC International Film Festival and organizer of the 68 Student Protest/take over; Mimi Machado-Luces- an Emmy Award-winning film producer, writer and director, programmer at WPFW and member of the 89 student takeover/protest; Anise Jenkins-Executive Director of Stand Up for Democracy and a member of the 68 Student take over/protest; and Viennetta Davis, Ahmari Anthony, Preston Foxx, and Llewellyn Robinson, current Howard University student members of #HUResist
Moderated by:
Professor Fahima Seck
Free and open to all.Â
A.C.T.O.R. is held on the first Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14th & V from 5:00 PM-7:00 pm.
The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion series is hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action! Each month there is a new topic for discussion.
