Description:

Join us as we explore these important questions around Countering Extremism through Social Entrepreneurship and Peace building Endeavors.

The “Arab Spring” originated in Tunisia in December 2011, and quickly swept through the MENA region. Six years later, we continue to witness its effects, which included regime change and political reforms, and in some cases war and strife.

Tunisia is often cited as the one “success story” where the uprising resulted in a swift removal of a dictator, and in a presumably successful democratization process. However, reality is more complex. In fact, Tunisia constitutes one of the main recruiting grounds for ISIS (arguably another outcome of the “Arab Spring”), and faces a host of other challenges.

Guest Speakers:

Mr. Dhia Otay and Dr. Adina Friedman, social entrepreneurs and MENA region specialists, will share their insights and stories of their work, particularly in Tunisia and Morocco. They will address key contemporary issues pertaining to the region and to US relations with it, and discuss how their work – cultural immersion and travel, interfaith and inter-communal encounters(specifically building on precedents of Jewish-Muslim coexistence), and other endeavors – contribute towards countering violent extremism and building sustainable peace.
