Description:

Busboys Books and the makers of the upcoming short film Aromcom invite you to an evening celebrating asexual, aromantic, and queer storytelling! Come gather at this free event co-sponsored by Aces and Aros of the Mid-Atlantic to meet local LGBTQIA+ actors and storytellers, explore aro/ace books, learn about resources for queer actors and filmmakers, and enjoy a staged reading of the Aromcom screenplay.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase from the Busboys restaurant, as well as a number of different ace and aro books available for 15% off from the Busboys bookstore.

Aromcom is a DC-area independent short film in production this winter depicting a cozy, platonic meet-cute. While stranded in a small Icelandic town during a winter storm, a lone traveler is reconnected with their lost GoPro, thanks to a nosy woman who looked through the entire memory card. An already fortuitous encounter turns even more lucky when they discover they’re both on the asexual and aromantic spectrums.

This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 7:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Please note that this event is IN PERSON and will NOT be livestreamed.

We ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books

Katrina Jackson (she/her) is the writer, director, and editor of Aromcom. She comes from a space science and digital video production background, and was previously the lead video producer for the Hubble Space Telescope. Her YouTube documentary for the JustSpace Alliance “Behind the Name: James Webb Space Telescope” about queer experiences in astronomy aired on Democracy Now. Aromcom is Katrina’s narrative film directorial and writing debut.

Catherine Bobalek (she/her) is the producer of Aromcom. She attended Savannah College of Art & Design, graduating with degrees in Film & Television and Dramatic Writing. Her short films Cupcake, Crossfire, and Lavande have collectively screened at over twenty festivals. She is passionate about creatively telling stories that center on women of the past and present, asexual and LGBTQIA+ topics, supporting BIPOC individuals and visibility, and creating work that promotes empathy and builds connection by bringing humor and satire to the subject.

Nathan (they/them) is the Bookstore Supervisor at Busboys Takoma, and an event organizer with Aces and Aros of the Mid-Atlantic, which is cosponsoring this event. They are a life-long resident of Washington, DC and are most passionate about reading science fiction, horror, fantasy, queer theory, and queer romance.
