Every last Sunday of the month we'll be hosting Queer Book Club led by Nathan, the Takoma Bookstore Supervisor, at Busboys and Poets Takoma. There we'll gather to discuss a specific book by a queer author or about a queer subject matter. This book club is for anyone who identifies as LGBTQIA+ and wants to talk about queer books; you can also attend as an ally or if you're questioning! Show up for good food, good books, and good friends - plus, when you show up you get 15% off your bookstore purchase for that day!
For July, Disability Pride Month 2023, go on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance with Elliott, the main character of Just By Looking At Him, by Ryan O’Connell.
You can pick it up at the Busboys and Poets Takoma bookstore for 15% off list price or wherever books are sold, including through our Bookshop.org page. It’s also available in audiobook form from Libro.fm.
And if you're just interested in discussing the intersections between queerness and disability, sharing your own experiences with disability or listening to others', you're welcome to come without reading the book!
Just By Looking At Him - From the star of Peacock's Queer as Folk and the Netflix series Special comes a "funny, tender, and beautiful" (Gary Janetti, New York Times bestselling author) novel following a gay TV writer with cerebral palsy as he fights addiction and searches for acceptance in an overwhelmingly ableist world.
Elliott appears to be living the dream as a successful TV writer with a doting boyfriend. But behind his Instagram filter of a life, he's grappling with an intensifying alcohol addiction, he can't seem to stop cheating on his boyfriend with various sex workers, and his cerebral palsy is making him feel like gay Shrek.
After falling down a rabbit hole of sex, drinking, and Hollywood backstabbing, Elliott decides to limp his way towards redemption. But facing your demons is easier said than done.
"With his singular voice and unforgettable wit" (Steven Rowley, author of The Guncle), Ryan O'Connell presents a candid, biting, and refreshingly real commentary on gay life, laugh-out-loud exploration of self, and a rare insight into life as a person with disabilities.
Nathan (they/them) is the Bookstore Supervisor at Busboys Takoma, and is thrilled to be moving and expanding their long-running Ace and Aro Book Club over to Busboys. They are an event organizer with Aces and Aros of the Mid-atlantic, which is cosponsoring this club. They are a life-long resident of Washington, DC and are most passionate about reading science fiction, horror, fantasy, queer theory, and queer romance - but this book club will not be limited by their tastes!
