Description:

Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets 14th & V welcomes Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick to present their new book "What Slaveholders Think: How Contemporary Perpetrators Rationalize What They Do."

Choi-Fitzpatrick, co-editor of From Human Trafficking to Human Rights, has worked in the anti-slavery movement for fifteen years. During that time he’s been frustrated at why the practice continues despite the millions of dollars spent to stop it. But while arguments against slavery seem self-evident, he noticed that the case in favor of it is largely unvoiced. To rectify that, Choi-Fitzpatrick, who teaches political sociology at the University of San Diego’s Kroc School of Peace Studies, talked to those who use slave labor to get their perspective on the issue. His groundbreaking book unveils both slaveholders’ moral blindness and the intricate power relationship that can make it difficult to emancipate enslaved workers.

This event is supported by Free the Slaves and Anti-Slavery International.
