Description:

Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets 14th & V welcomes Alia Malek to present their new book "The Home That Was Our Country: A Memoir of Syria."

A Syrian-American civil rights lawyer and journalist, now with Al Jazeera America, Malek combines family and national history for this vivid account of Syria from its rule by the Ottomans through the period of French colonization and on to the rise of the Assad regime. As adept at storytelling as she is at reporting and political analysis, Malek, awarded the Marie Colvin Award for Foreign Correspondence for her coverage of Syria for The New York Times, charts the devastating effects of Syria’s repressive rule by showing how individuals have been affected by sectarian rifts, censorship, disappearances, and the refugee crisis.
