Description:

Politics & Prose at Busboys and Poets Takoma welcomes Lori Tharps to present their new book "Same Family, Different Colors: Confronting Colorism in America's Diverse Families."

Tharps is an associate professor of journalism at Temple University, the co-author of Hair Story, and the mother of three mixed-race children. Intimately familiar with the complexities of today’s color politics, she uses her own experience as a point of departure for her insightful look at skin color in the United States. Tharps has traveled widely and relates stories of color bias from African American, Latino, Asian American and other communities, showing how perceptions of skin color affect individuals, relationships, and families.
