Description:

Every last Sunday of the month we'll be hosting Queer Book Club led by Nathan, the Takoma Bookstore Supervisor, at Busboys and Poets Takoma. There we'll gather to discuss a specific book by a queer author or about a queer subject matter. This book club is for anyone who identifies as LGBTQIA+ and wants to talk about queer books - you can also show up as an ally or if you're questioning! Show up for good food, good books, and good friends- plus, the more frequently you show up, the more goodies (in the form of discounts and priority book-pick) you can collect.

For the month of August, visit California’s San Gabriel Valley and get to see a queer alien courtship, deals with the devil, and cursed violins… over fresh donuts? Come on this adventure with us in Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki

"This warm, hopeful novel features this entertaining tangle of women all trying to find their true place in a difficult world. Katrina’s passion and hard-working determination drive the novel; she stuns Satomi with her intuitive, self-taught playing of video-game-inspired pieces even as she deals with the effects of trauma from the domestic, verbal, and sexual abuse she’s endured. Aoki’s novel is an exciting, wild web of an adventure, an unputdownable book about music, found family, and identity. Diving into the tough subjects, Aoki’s book emerges with a joyful, queer, radical ballad of a story that will appeal to fans of TJ Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea (2020)" - Leah Von Essen (Booklist Review)

You can pick it up at any Busboys bookstore or wherever books are sold, including through our Bookshop.org page. This book is also available from our partners at Libro.fm as an audiobook- please choose whichever form is most convenient for you!

We can’t wait to see you at our in person meeting, but if you can’t make it but still want to be involved visit us on Discord! We’ll keep the conversation going between book clubs, and this is the perfect way to stay in touch with other fans of queer authors and books.

Light From Uncommon Stars - Shizuka Satomi made a deal with the devil: to escape damnation, she must entice seven other violin prodigies to trade their souls for success. She has already delivered six.

When Katrina Nguyen, a young transgender runaway, catches Shizuka's ear with her wild talent, Shizuka can almost feel the curse lifting. She's found her final candidate.

But in a donut shop off a bustling highway in the San Gabriel Valley, Shizuka meets Lan Tran, retired starship captain, interstellar refugee, and mother of four. Shizuka doesn't have time for crushes or coffee dates, what with her very soul on the line, but Lan's kind smile and eyes like stars might just redefine a soul's worth. And maybe something as small as a warm donut is powerful enough to break a curse as vast as the California coastline.

As the lives of these three women become entangled by chance and fate, a story of magic, identity, curses, and hope begins, and a family worth crossing the universe for is found.

Nathan (they/them) is the Bookstore Supervisor at Busboys Takoma, and is thrilled to be moving and expanding their long-running Ace and Aro Book Club over to Busboys. They are an event organizer with Aces and Aros of the Mid-atlantic, which is cosponsoring this club. They are a life-long resident of Washington, DC and are most passionate about reading science fiction, horror, fantasy, queer theory, and queer romance - but this book club will not be limited by their tastes!
