Every last Sunday of the month we'll be hosting Queer Book Club led by Nathan, the Takoma Bookstore Supervisor, at Busboys and Poets Takoma. There we'll gather to discuss a specific book by a queer author or about a queer subject matter. This book club is for anyone who identifies as LGBTQIA+ and wants to talk about queer books - you can also show up as an ally or if you're questioning! Show up for good food, good books, and good friends- plus, the more frequently you show up, the more goodies (in the form of discounts and priority book-pick) you can collect.
The first book, in honor of Pride 2022, will be The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Klune’s New York Times bestseller, breakout contemporary fantasy was picked to bring home some joy in a time where the world seems to be missing some, and to show how families come in all shapes, sizes, and supernatural abilities. Not only that- we hope that this is a reminder of the power of simple kindness and empathy, and the way that those kindnesses can be revolutionary in themselves.
Join us and Lambda Literary Award-winning author TJ Klune (in spirit- we make no promises about their attendance) for his bestselling, breakout contemporary fantasy that's “1984 meets The Umbrella Academy with a pinch of Douglas Adams thrown in. Touching, tender, and truly delightful, The House in the Cerulean Sea is an utterly absorbing story of tolerance, found family, and defeating bureaucracy.”
You can pick it up at any Busboys bookstore or wherever books are sold, including through our Bookshop.org page. This book is also available from our partners at Libro.fm as an audiobook- please choose whichever form is most convenient for you!
We can’t wait to see you at our second meeting, but if you can’t make it but still want to be involved visit us on Discord! We’ll keep the conversation going between book clubs, and this is the perfect way to stay in touch with other fans of queer authors and books.
The House in the Cerulean Sea - A magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret.
Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages. When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he's given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they're likely to bring about the end of days.
But the children aren't the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn. An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place--and realizing that family is yours.
Nathan (they/them) is the Bookstore Supervisor at Busboys Takoma, and is thrilled to be moving and expanding their long-running Ace and Aro Book Club over to Busboys. They are an event organizer with Aces and Aros of the Mid-atlantic, which is cosponsoring this club. They are a life-long resident of Washington, DC and are most passionate about reading science fiction, horror, fantasy, queer theory, and queer romance - but this book club will not be limited by their tastes!
