The purpose of the Opening Doors session is to build awareness of the agency’s services and to foster well-informed conversations about ending chronic homelessness and supporting recovery in Washington, DC.
There are more than 13 homeless individuals for each member of the House and Senate. If everyone in the District struggling with homelessness got in a single file line, stretched out their arms to either side and held hands, they could form a circle a perimeter of roughly 6.9 miles. That is enough to surround an area from the east front of the Capitol, up Pennsylvania Avenue, up and around the White House, back to the Mall, around the Lincoln Memorial, down and around the Jefferson Memorial, back to the Mall and all the way back to the Capitol.
Pathways to Housing DC moves individuals who are coping with homelessness, substance abuse, and other challenges off the streets and into safe, permanent housing. What has made Pathways DC so unique in its success over the past decade is the reversal of the traditional treatment sequence. Instead of requiring clients to be “clean and sober,†Pathways offers housing FIRST, without preconditions that can delay someone getting into a safe and stable situation. Nine out of 10 individuals housed by Pathways DC stay in housing and on the path to recovery.
Since 2004, Pathways to Housing DC has successfully ended homelessness and supported recovery for more than 600 of the most vulnerable residents in our nation’s capital. Stable, supportive housing is merely the first step toward reintegrating into their community, rebuilding family relationships, reconnecting with their faith fellowships, and experiencing an improvement in overall physical health and psychological well-being.
This is event is free and open to all. Absolutely no fundraising or money is requested from this event.
