Description:

Join us for one of our first in-person events of 2021 to shed light on the resiliency of Palestinians in their everyday lives with journalist Marda Dunsky in STORIES FROM PALESTINE (released March 1st, 2021 - $35 retail). STORIES FROM PALESTINE highlights the voices of Palestinians beyond the oppressive regime they live under- come with us as we explore the lives of artists, scientists, farmers, and more to get a more intimate understand of everyday life for Palestinians and honor their resilient spirits.

This event is free and open to all through RSVP on our Eventbrite page- there is limited space to observe COVID-19 social distancing in our event room, the Nicolas Guillen Room, at Busboys and Poets of Takoma. Food and drink table service will be provided during the event. This event will not be livestreamed, so make sure to RSVP sooner than later to ensure a seat!

The program will start out with an introduction from our Events Assistant and Takoma Supervisor Kevin Zambrano before we get right to it with a slideshow and video presentation highlighting common representations of Palestinians in the mainstream media contrasted by images of Palestinians she interviewed for her book. We’ll see what it means to interview folks beyond their oppression to find the souls beneath the conflict and truly explore what it means to be Palestinian. There will be time for Q&A with the audience before we end our program.

About STORIES FROM PALESTINE: The long-form narratives in STORIES FROM PALESTINE: NARRATIVES OF RESILIENCE are based on field interviews author Marda Dunsky conducted with two dozen Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, and remotely, several in the Gaza Strip. Their stories illustrate Palestinians' humanity and agency in their creative and productive roles as entrepreneurs, scientists, cultural curators, farmers, writers, artists and educators while facing the circumstances of living under Israeli occupation. Stories from Palestine presents a counterpoint to frequent if not dominant media representations of Palestinians as being caught up in oppression and violence but little else, which preclude the possibility of relatability to many Americans, including policy makers.

Marda Dunsky is a journalist and journalism scholar who focuses on Israel-Palestine. She has taught on the faculty of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and has held editing and reporting positions at the Chicago Tribune and Jerusalem Post. She is also the author of "Pens and Swords: How the American Mainstream Media Report the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict" (Columbia University Press, 2008).
