Description:

Bread and Poses and Busboys and Poets presents:  We Were There; A Celebration of Women’s History Month an inspiring and moving live, multi-media celebration of Women's Labor History, “We Were There” (WWT) features spoken word, music and images to powerfully illustrate women's longtime role in the fight for worker's rights. A cast of local women activists will be led by WWT composer and organizer Bev Grant with members of the DC Labor Chorus led by Elise Bryant as they bring history to life and the cheering audience to their feet.

About the composer:

"Bev Grant is a brilliant feminist pioneer with a true rock and roll heart! What's not to love?"
- Anne Feeney.

Bev Grant grew up singing and playing in Portland, Oregon, where she began her performing career as a child in a band with her two sisters. After moving to New York City, she devoted herself to topical songwriting and social activism, notably in her band The Human Condition. Bev is featured on the Grammy-nominated Best of Broadside album and is the founder and director of the Brooklyn Women’s Chorus. Her song “We Were There” has become an anthem of women in the labor movement, and many other of her award-winning songs can be found on her numerous recordings. Bev is currently working on a new CD which she hopes to release in 2016.

Bread & Roses is a monthly labor series that features a variety of events focused on workers and organized labor. Each month brings a new topic through interactive discussions, film screenings, and performances. The hope for these events is that attendees walk away with a greater understanding of organized labor, its role in shaping history and current relevance. The name “Bread & Roses” was inspired by a poem/song written by James Oppenheim that appeals for both fair wages and dignified conditions. Bread & Roses is held on the second Tuesday of every month at Busboys and Poets, Takoma.
