The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion series is hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action! Each month there is a new topic for discussion.
This Month: Police Relations and Race

This discussion will feature Ron Hampton of the National Police Accountability Project. Ronald Hampton retired from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department after twenty-three years of service as Community Relations Officer. He is reputed for his outstanding work with the citizens of the Third District in Washington, D.C. in crime prevention and community participation and relations. His extensive experience and knowledge in community relations and policing has resulted in education and training opportunities for Mr. Hampton locally, nationally, and internationally.
Also, Professor Bahiyyah Muhammad, from Howard University's Sociological Department will present.  Dr. Muhammad willbe teaching a course called, Inside-Out: Crime and Justice Beyond the Wall. This class is a unique opportunity to explore issues of crime and justice from inside a correctional facility. The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program brings together students from universities and students who are incarcerated to learn about and discuss topics such as the causes of crime, victims, the rationale of the criminal justice system, restorative justice, the prison industrial complex and the cradle to prison pipeline. Through the readings and dialogue, inside and outside students will be able to integrate their theoretical knowledge with lived experiences. It is through this exchange that Dr. Muhammad hopes to critically analyze and challenge the current system in the U.S. that has resulted in a higher incarceration rate than other similar countries.
Free and open to all.Â
A.C.T.O.R. is held on the first Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14 th & V; 5:00 PM.
