Description:

Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes are the thematic backdrop for a walking tour telling the story of literary life in the U Street corridor, Howard University, and Shaw after World War I and into the Prohibition era -- a time of great expectations, change, and conflict then and now in the capital city.

You’ll start the tour with breakfast and pictorial overview by tour guide and cultural historian Michon Boston in the Hughes-themed Langston Room atBusboys and Poets. The walk begins from the Zora-themed Eatonville Restaurant and explores U Street, Zora's alma mater Howard University, the site of Griffith Stadium, DC's old Bakery Row, the Howard Theatre, ending on 7th Street, where Langston found "The Weary Blues."

  1. Breakfast (fixed menu) and overview at Busboys and Poets (9:30 - 10:45 am)
  2. Walking Tour, includes snack at Uprising Muffin Company. Your tour guide will provide recommendations to the bars and other places of interest on 7th Street where the tour ends (at Howard University/Shaw Metro).

It is so important to have tours like this and more ways to keep alive the stories of those who lived, worked, even created great masterpieces just down the street from that sleek condo.
