Two non-profits working in South Africa will be hosting a reception and film screening where there will be an opportunity to meet two amazing women from Ireland who made history and the award-winning film director who chronicled their story. During the 1980s, a group of workers from Dunne’s store in Dublin refused to handle fruit from the oppressive apartheid regime in South Africa, at great personal expense to themselves and their families. It was nearly three years before they were able to return to their jobs after going on strike. Following his release from prison, Nelson Mandela publicly recognized the Irish workers for their role in drawing international attention to the inhumane system of apartheid. The Irish film director, Sinead O’Brien, who told their story in the compelling documentary Blood Fruit, will be on hand along with two of the workers, Mary Manning and Karen Gearon, to answer questions following the screening.  Co-hosted by the Niall Mellon Townships Initiative and the South Africa-Washington International Program. Open to the public. To order tickets or for more information: Click here
