Busboys and Poets presents live music by D.C. band The CooLots followed by Q&A with the band
The CooLots are the original Rock/Soul band hailing from the Washington, DC area. A melting pot of different styles and talents, The CooLots come together to create feelings never experienced before. These creations embody sincerity, musicality, rock, funk, and soul, with influences including: N.E.R.D, Me'Shell N'Degeocello, Sade, Staind, Erykah Badu, Kanye West and System of A Down. You can hear all these influences on The CooLots EP - their debut effort, released January 7th, 2014.
Who are The CooLots:
AWESOMERITA (Vocals/Keys)
Awesome Rita, born and raised in Washington, DC, on November 24th is a visual artist (1st love) that specializes in photography and graphic design with a passion for teaching her craft. Her musical/art influences are Earth, Wind, & Fire, Kings of Leon, N.E.R.D., The CooLots, and Gordon Parks. Rita loves to make meaningful music that everyone can shake a tail feather to, and The CooLots are the epitome of awesome music. When Rita is not out taking photos, teaching, or making music, she enjoys laughing until her face cracks, crushing leaves in the Fall, and listening to awesome sounds that make everyone forget about their problems
CRYS (Vocals)
Crystal Cornish, born November 7th in Washington, DC, started her artistic journey at a young age. Her formal training began at age 7 with the DC Youth Orchestra, playing the viola. She continued to build on her passion for the arts studying ballet, musical theater, piano, as well as vocal music. She developed a pretty eclectic musical appetite from this, being influenced by J.S. Bach, Y.E.S., Jimi Hendrix, Sade, No Doubt, Faith Evans and Teena Marie. (She attributes much of this taste to her guitarist father.) With an increasing desire to incorporate all of the influences, she found her way into a trio which would ultimately become The CooLots. "Music is my dream. Aside from my family, music has always been a constant. Now it's wrapped in one."
DAPPHO the Flow-Er (Bass Guitar)
Jonquille "Dappho the Flow-Er" Rice was born on August 4th and has been a Washingtonian ever since. Her love of music stems deep. As a child she composed songs on her Casio keyboard, wrote poetry, and sang in the church choir. In love with the arts, Dappho is not only a singer, bassist, and composer, she is a host, promoter, audio engineer, poet, educator, and radio host. "I just wanna get free and move the people"is one of her favorite quotes. Her musical influences include N.E.R.D., The Police, and Me'Shell N'Degeocello.
BOOMCLAK (Drums)
Asha "BOOMCLAK" Santee was born on September 3rd in San Francisco, CA and has been drumming since the old age of 6. She picked up her first pair of sticks after watching her father play the drums in church. In middle school, she maintained first chair being the only girl in the class and moved on to high school to be on the drum line. After pursuing a career in basketball, she quickly realized that her Love was embedded in the creation and performance of music. BOOMCLAK found her new home behind the cocktail drum set and changes the face of the classic rock & soul drummer. When she is not on stage with The CooLots, she is coaching basketball at Largo High School and running her company Note 2 Self LLC.
HUGGIE Huggster (Electric Guitar)Huggie Huggster has been around music most of his life. Huggie was born on February 9th in Charlotte, NC. He has played various instruments throughout his school years to finally settle into guitar. After about a year of performing at open mics in DC, he met Dappho and was asked to jam with the newly forming CooLots. When Huggie is not playing or singing, he enjoys watching MMA events and general tomfoolery.
