WHAT: Building on the success of last year’s inaugural NFHA 1K Poetry Slam, the National Fair Housing Alliance is pleased to announce the second event in this annual series, “Amplify Voices: Silent No More.†Twelve world-renowned spoken word artists from D.C. and across the country will descend on Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville to compete with original, socially-minded poems for a grand prize of $1,000. In addition to the competition, the top three poets from last year’s slam will return to perform a feature presentation of their prize-winning poetry and a new spoken word piece created especially for this event. The winner of the first ever NFHA “Write the Wrongs†high school writing competition will also perform their winning poem and receive a $1,000 scholarship to the educational institution of their choice.Â
WHY: Silence is an act of violence. More than ever, we have a responsibility to amplify the voices of those speaking out daily on social injustices. We must also strive to strengthen the voices of the unheard and those who do not believe their voices matter. NFHA has partnered with various organizations to create a space for this vital work, bringing together some of the best writers and performers from around the country to combat the rippling effects of silence through the use of their dynamic stage presence and uncanny ability to speak truth to power.Â
WHO: This is event is brought to you by the National Fair Housing Alliance. Sponsors include Chase Bank, Nationwide, State Farm, and Radian. Busboys and Poets and Glossrags Clothing have also made generous contributions to make this event possible. WHEN: Monday, April 27th, 2015 8:00pm to 10:00pmÂ
