How a Legume Saved a Family Farm: A discussion on the Lentil Underground and the future of U.S. agriculture
When low wheat prices threatened his family’s farm in Montana, David Oien ignored the mainstream advice to grow chemically reliant crops and instead planted organic lentils. Despite widespread skepticism, the lentils – which are drought-tolerant, grow their own fertilizer, and provide healthy food –revitalized the farm and became the cornerstone of Timeless Natural Food, now a million dollar enterprise. Author Liz Carlisle tells the story in her new book, Lentil Underground: Renegade Farmers and the Future of Food in America.
Join Liz, David Oien, and Union of Concerned Scientists Food & Environment director Ricardo Salvador for an insightful discussion about the Lentil Underground and what it can tell us about the nation’s industrial agriculture as well as the exciting opportunities to support a thriving, sustainable, and healthier food and farming system.
