Description:

Join us for an in-depth conversation on the far-reaching economic and geopolitical implications of the new UN sanctions on Iran.

Vali Nasr, the Majid Khadduri Professor of International Affairs and Middle East Studies at Johns Hopkins SAIS, brings decades of scholarship and policy experience to the discussion. A former Dean of SAIS and Senior Advisor to U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, Nasr is a globally recognized expert on Middle East politics and international relations. He is the author of several acclaimed books, including Iran’s Grand Strategy: A Political History and How Sanctions Work: Iran and the Impact of Economic Warfare.

He will be joined by Negar Mortazavi, award-winning journalist, commentator, and host of The Iran Podcast. A Senior Fellow at the Center for International Policy and Nonresident Scholar at the Middle East Policy Council, Mortazavi has spent over a decade reporting on Iranian and Middle Eastern affairs and U.S. foreign policy. Her analysis has appeared in Foreign Policy, Politico, The Intercept, and on major outlets including CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera.

Together, they will explore how sanctions are reshaping Iran’s economy, politics, and society—and what these developments mean for the broader region and global diplomacy.
