Description:

Along with trying to take over the District’s police department, the President and Congress are trying to repeal or modify many of the criminal justice reforms that the DC Council passed after extensive public debate. This conversation provides a space for District residents to develop a shared sense of the meaning of “public safety” so that we can combat this attempted takeover with unity and protect home rule. We will confront the misinformation that prevails among those who would reverse our laws, focusing on solutions that strengthen communities, help crime victims feel safe, and create pathways of healing and accountability, while keeping in mind the inequitable and racist consequences of common approaches to policing and prisons.

Our panelists will draw on evidence, lived experience and community wisdom. We will share strategies to confront the root causes of violence, debunk harmful myths, and articulate a vision of public safety as a practice that benefits every neighborhood and resident. Join us to plan for a safer, more just future for all who call the District home.

Speakers:

Rob Barton, More Than Our Crimes

James Carpenter, Neighbors for Justice

Nana Kufuor, entrepreneur and crime survivor

Moderator: Penelope Spain, Open City Advocates
