Description:

Comedy as a Second Language brings the hilarious stand-up comedy of immigrant and 1st generation performers. We have an amazing line-up: Denise Taylor, Alvin Kuai, Jennifer Amo, and Christian Escoto. This show will have your sides splitting with laughter and your cheeks aching from smiling. Laugh with our comics as they share stories of their upbringing, getting used to a new country, coping with immigrant parenting differences, being bilingual (or not!) and more.

Meet Your Performers:

Denise Taylor knew she was going to be a comedian ever since her fourth grade teacher called her a "ringleader" for distracting the class with jokes. Today she is a regular at venues like the Kennedy Center, The DC Improv Comedy Club, the Drafthouse Comedy Theatre, and Underground Comedy DC's Big Hunt. At 26, Denise's sardonic material, unique observations, and commanding stage presence has placed her at the top of the comedy circuit in Washington, D.C. She's opened for several national touring headliners, including Judah Friedlander, Chris Gethard, Kamau Bell, Moshe Kasher, and Nicole Byer. Denise is currently a contributor for The Onion. She also just graduated from law school, where teachers were still frustrated with her. Follow her @denidenitaytay so she doesn't have to do that forever.

Alvin Kuai is a New York City comedian. He is a regular at Caroline's and various clubs around the city. He was in the 2019 New York Comedy Festival on the Best of New Talent showcase. He was also a finalist in the 2019 Devil Cup Festival and placed 3rd in the 2017 Atlanta Punchline Comedy Festival. He's been featured on the South China Morning Post as an Asian American Comic to Watch and the Comedy Cellar's podcast "Live from the Table."

Jennifer Amo is a comedian, writer and actress that is a native of the DMV area. Her comedy mostly focuses around her upbringing as a first-generation child of immigrants, dating and the small absurdities of life. For a second year in a row, she is a House Comic at Laugh Index Theatre for the 2018-19 season. In addition, she has performed in numerous venues to include the DC Improv and sketch comedy at the DC Drafthouse. In her spare time, she enjoys complaining about gentrification in DC.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Christian Escoto began performing comedy after his high school graduation. Since then, he regularly performs around the DC area and the Baltimore region. Using his quick wit and stage persona, Christian entertains the audience with jokes and stories about growing up in DC area as a Filipino-American. He has performed multiple times at the DC Drafthouse Comedy Theater, the DC Improv, the Howard Theater, the State Theater, the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, the Lisner Auditorium and has opened for the national touring improv troupe the Groundlings and has open for Filipino comedians Rex Navarette and JR De Guzman, UK comedian Shazia Mirza, and Chilean comedian Fabrizio Capano. www.christianescoto.com
