Description:

The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion series is hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action! Each month there is a new topic for discussion.

This Month's Topic: World AIDS DAY

Systemic racism, oppression, and poverty disproportionately affect people of color not only in this country but globally. Is there any wonder why health crises affect brown and black people significantly more under this system of hate? What are some of the factors? What are people doing to address not only the AIDS epidemic but also the racist system that keeps people at risk?

Featuring:

Dwayne Lawson-Brown has a passion for DC's youth and their well-being. Lawson-Brown works at Whitman-Walker Health because he's able to support young people as they develop into thriving adults. Since 1999, Dwayne has worked to increase youth involvement in HIV awareness and prevention programs. Since joining Whitman-Walker Health in 2015, Dwayne has had the pleasure of creating events focusing on fusing counter-culture communities with public health through the arts. Being a DC native, Dwayne uses his many community connections to help influence change. Fun Fact: Lawson-Brown is a published poet and host of DC's longest-running open mic!

Adalphie Johnson comes to SMYAL with over 8 years of program experience in the non-profit arena specifically in the Sexual Reproductive Health and Youth Development fields. Although a native Washingtonian, Adalphie completed her education in Prince George’s County Public Schools and earned her Masters of Divinity from The Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University.

Through partnerships and working with DCPS, DCPCS, recreation centers, faith-based institutions and a variety of other CBO’s and non-profits, Adalphie has been able to create, support, provide and implement safe spaces and developmentally appropriate programming to support youth in the DMV.

As the Programs Director at SMYAL, Adalphie is committed to providing safe spaces for all LGBTQ youth to celebrate who they are and to walk authentically in their truth.

When not working, Adalphie enjoys traveling, spending time with friends, and engaging in new experiences.

Free and open to all.

A.C.T.O.R. is held on the first Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14th & V from 5:00 PM-7:00 pm.
