Description:

Busboys and Poets and ACTOR welcome filmmaker Darnley R. Hodge, Jr. who will be screening the 25-minute preview for his forthcoming documentary series, The American LOWS (Legacy of White Supremacy). The screening will be followed by discussion and Q&A.

ABOUT THE SERIES

The American LOWS series is a collection of interview-based documentaries that examine the global system of racism/white supremacy and the evolution of that system in America. Interviewees include some of the nations top scholars, researchers, politicians, and authorities. Perhaps by understanding how today’s racial dynamics are connected to the more overtly racist practices of the past, we can finally identify and rout out the most stubborn and illusive remaining residues from our deeply soiled national history.

ABOUT THE CREATOR

For more than 15 years, veteran photojournalist and editor, Darnley R. Hodge, Jr., has worked for national television networks like NBC, ABC, COX and CNN covering Washington D.C. politics and important news events all over the world. And as his career took him to more than 20 countries on five continents, Darnley also witnessed first hand how the scourge of racism plagues our nation and our planet - how the darker skinned members of every society he visited tended to be held in lower regard. Darnley wanted to use his access and experience to address the issue on screen but knew the documentary film world was different than the news environment he was accustomed to. So in 2012 he decided to pursue a Master Degree in Producing for Film and Video at American University to further enhance his film making knowledge expertise, especially on the business end. It was there, while studying under IMAX documentary filmmaker, Chris Palmer, that Darnley became inspired to create, as his master thesis, a documentary series that would address the root cause of the race issues faced by the worldwide African diaspora, particularly in the United States: The global system of white supremacy. Suffice to say the project was a major undertaking with potentially dangerous consequences. But after more than a year of research, study, and interviews, the project took on something of a life of its own, becoming something far above and beyond a University project. The American LOWS (Legacy of White Supremacy) series is the result.

The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion series is hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action! Each month there is a new topic for discussion.

Free and open to all.

A.C.T.O.R. is held on the first Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14 th & V; 5:00 PM.
