Description:

Join us for a special evening of music with Washington D.C.'s very own Be Steadwell and Butterscotch, the world's first female beatbox champion from California. This will be a night of powerhouse talent by two queer, live-looping, soulful women, sharing the stage for the first time!

Be Steadwell is a songwriter and filmmaker from Washington, DC. Redefining the love song in a modern context-Be's unapologetic content focuses on love between women. Be's playful lyrics and soulful voice will make you cry one moment, then laugh the next. In her live performances, she utilizes loop pedal vocal layering and beat boxing to compose her songs on stage. Be has performed at the Apollo Music Cafe (2014), toured internationally with the Revival tours (2013 and 2014), performed at Toshi Reagon's "Word Rock & Sword Festival" (2013-2014) and composed music for the feature film "Stud Life" (2013). Be completed an MFA in film from Howard University and is currently touring and screening her film Vow of Silence (2014) internationally.

Butterscotch, the retro-futuristic, voice percussionist virtuosa, is a force to be reckoned with in today’s music scene. She began her career in hip hop's underground beatbox battle scene, ultimately being crowned the world's first female beatbox champion in 2005. Soon thereafter, Butterscotch was finalist on America’s Got Talent. The exposure on national TV gained her thousands of fans and kickstarted a prolific career that continues to this day. A powerful blend of Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, and R&B, Butterscotch's musical world is as unique as her genetic makeup. She represents every aspect of her mixed heritage (African American/Native American/Asian/German) and is a proud LGBTQ team player and activist. Her music always contains a message to reach those who are in need of love and inspiration, and addresses mental health issues because she suffered severely with depression in her youth and knows that music harnesses the power to save lives. She has traveled the world opening and performing alongside legends such as Erykah Badu, Thievery Corporation, Earth, Wind & Fire, Nile Rodgers, Sergio Mendes, Bobby McFerrin, Wyclef Jean, Talib Kweli, and the LA Philharmonic, to name a few.
