Please join the NAACP Arlington Chapter 7047 for our 2018 Black History Month Event. We will be screening "13th", a powerful documentary from Ava DuVernay that explores race in the US criminal justice system. The film is titled after the Thirteenth amendment of the United States Constitution, which outlawed slavery (unless as punishment for a crime).
“An unflinching, well-informed and thoroughly researched look at the American system of incarceration†(Roger Ebert); “incendiary, indelible and indispensable†(Rolling Stone); “vital, searing and engaging†(Vox); “devastating, infuriating and bracing†(Truthdig).
The documentary focuses on how “for hundreds of years now, the American justice system has been serving as a vehicle for racism and the political rhetoric that capitalizes on it. From the ‘convict leasing’ of former slaves after 1865, to the criminalization of civil rights activism in the 1960s, to the craven politicking that used images of black criminality to win elections in the 1970s and ’80s, the story of how we got to our present moment is devastating in its coherence.†(Slate)
