Join us at Busboys and Poets 450 K St for a conversation with Sarah Valentine for her book, When I Was White. Copies of the book will be for sale at the bookstore, before and after the event. Sarah will be signing copies of the book after the talk. Full menu and bar will also be available inside the event space. The doors open to the public at 6PM and the discussion will begin at 6:30PM. This is a FREE event, seats are first come, first served.
When I Was White is a memoir about Valentine's experience growing up in Pittsburgh as a mixed-race African American who was raised to believe she was white. The memoir chronicles Valentine's transition from white to black, her search for her biological father, her journey through depression, and confronting the hard truths about race in America.
Sarah Valentine is a widely published author and translator whose interests include black and mixed-race experience, mystery, true crime, and historical fiction. She has taught literature and creative writing at Northwestern University, Princeton, UCLA and the University of California-Riverside. She is a graduate of the Callaloo creative writing workshop, the recipient of a Lannan Writers Residency, and winner of Prairie Schooner's 2013 Best Emerging Writer Award.
