“A Year of Writing…A Year of Fighting†@ Busboys & Poets
Fighting Cancer With Poetry, Inc. was inspired by their beloved Justin Izlar. He was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2005, when he was 18 and lost his battle on January 2, 2012, when he was 25 years old. His 7 year battle with sarcoma is exemplary of optimism and perseverance. Justin began to write poetry after his diagnosis. Although Justin is no longer with us, he believed that you shouldn't leave this earth without leaving something behind that can potentially change someone's life for the better. And indeed, he did just that.
During Justin’s battle with cancer, he wrote inspirational poetry that helped him through the difficult times. Justin didn’t just write for himself, he believed that you shouldn’t leave this earth without leaving something behind that can potentially change someone’s life for the better. His poetry is what he left behind.
Fighting Cancer With Poetry, Inc. will celebrate a year of outstanding service by hosting yet another power-packed Poetry Jam Fundraiser. This Def Poetry Jam-styled event features a roster of spoken word artists that have performed all over the world. Appearances have ranged from TED, Sundance, UpWorthy & Huffington, to HBO, TVONE, the Apollo Theater, and venues across the country and beyond.
The mission of Fighting Cancer With Poetry, Inc. is to creatively engage and encourage people around the world to use poetry and other resourceful and innovative ideas, to inform, impact, and inspire others to join the fight against cancer.
The vision is to inspire the world to use creative and innovative forms of art to bring awareness and funding for ALL cancers and ultimately the cure.
