A DC Science Café Event… The Science, Medicine, and Politics of Antibiotic Resistance
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases estimates that 5-10% of hospital patients develop drug resistant bacterial infections even as the introduction of new infection-fighting medicines into clinical practice has been slowing down. Contributing to the rapid rise of antibiotic resistance are two ingrained practices: over-prescription of antibiotics by the medical community and overuse of antibiotics in agriculture.
Join molecular biology research scientist Kevin Ramkissoon, epidemiologist physician KayvonModjarrad, and policy expert David Smith, an epidemiologist and expert in the economics of infectious disease, in a lively discussion about the biological mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, what it means for clinicians, what is at stake for society, and the scientific, medical, and policy steps required to counter the steady rise of antibiotic resistance.
