Join us for a discussion and reading to honor the 20th Anniversary of "It's Your Mug" and the birthday of Langston Hughes! 

Come celebrate Langston Hughes' birthday with a panel discussion and open mic. Moderated by Kim Roberts, the panel features Kenny Carroll, Raquel Brown and Toni Asante Lightfoot talking about the history of the DC spoken word scene.  An open mic will follow.

Kim Roberts (Moderator) is an award-winning American poet, author, and editor residing in Washington, D.C. She is the editor of Beltway Poetry Quarterly, and the anthology Full Moon On K Street: Poems About Washington DC (Plan B Press, 2010),[2] and author of the poetry books Animal Magnetism (Pearl Editions, 2011),The Kimnama (Vrzhu Press, 2007) and The Wishbone Galaxy (Washington Writers Publishing House, 1994).  Her work has been published in numerous anthologies and literary journals throughout the US, and internationally.

Toni Asante Lightfoot (poet), a native Washingtonian currently living in exile in Chicago, is planning her return to DC once she completes her MS in Acupuncture. Her poetry can be found on web anthologies and blogs such as Torch and DC?s own Beltway. She coedited the 15th anniversary anthology of It's Your Mug poets and co-edited Dream of a Word: The Tia Chucha Press Poetry Anthology with Quraysh Ali Lansana.  

Kenneth Carroll is the author of the poetry collection So What! For the White Dude Who Said This Ain?t Poetry (1997). He has been a contributor to Beltway Magazine, and his work is included in the anthologies In Search of Color Everywhere (1994), American Poetry: The Next Generation (2000), and The Lion Speaks: An Anthology for Hurricane Katrina (2006). Active as a teacher and in arts organizations, Carroll has been coordinator and director of the DC WritersCorps and was a founding member of 8Rock Writers Collective and a past president of the African-American Writers Guild.

Raquel "Ra" Brown was born and raised in Philadelphia. She's been writing since she was 13. Host of infamous Mangos at 14th and U Street, (now called Jin) for the better of a decade, Ra found performance and hosting opportunities across the country and abroad, performing on stages from the Kennedy Center for the Mayor's Arts Awards, Lisner Auditorium, the Lincoln Theater, to the Black Cat and 9:30 clubs. Ra Brown hosts an open mic every Wednesday at Sweet and Natural, in Mt Rainier, Md. where artists of all walks come to share.

Mandlenkosi 'Kosi' Dunn is an 18-year-old South African-American poet, writer, and tap dancer currently pursuing a dual degree in Electrical Engineering and Graphic Design at the University of Maryland. Kosi has performed with the DC Youth Slam Poetry Team for the past 3 years and was voted the 2011 National Underground Spoken Word Award?s ?Best Youth Performance.? He has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Atlas, the Lincoln Theater and the State Theatre in Tshwane, South Africa. He has also had the privilege to host the Busboys and Poets monthly youth open mic from 2011-2013.
