WE ACT RADIO AND BUSBOYS AND POETS-ANACOSTIA COLLABORATE TO HONOR SLAIN JOURNALIST CHARNICE A. MILTON (6/19/87-5/27/15)
On the fourth anniversary of her unsolved murder, artists, activists, colleagues, and community members gather to honor the legacy of Charnice A. Milton (6/19/87-5/27/15), helping to extend a literacy oasis growing in her name.
Ms. Milton, a Ward 7 native, book lover, and reporter for East of the River and Hill Rag newspapers, was shot to death on her way home from an assignment on May 27, 2015. The following year, We Act Radio launched efforts to create the Charnice Milton Community Bookstore (CMCB) at 1918 Martin Luther King Avenue, SE with high profile events sponsored by Go-Go legends EU featuring Sugar Bear. Recognizing the many links between low literacy and high crime and
violence, CMCB promotes literacy and increases book ownership among young people east of the river, in Charnice's name.
The new collaboration brings CMCB's used books, a "Gentrification + Displacement" collection, and a permanent display highlighting Ms. Milton's contributions to local journalism, to Busboys and Poets Anacostia Bookstore, 2004 Martin Luther King Avenue SE.
The event will include the unveiling of a melted-bullet sculpture, music, and a summer reading book give-away for youth.
Helping CMCB celebrate this milestone in promoting a literacy oasis east of the river will be
Free and open to all
