College Night hosted by Mariah Barber

Mariah Barber is Carolina girl from the 704 and current Peace Corps volunteer between countries. She is a self-proclaimed “bag lady” & “nomad” who is claiming DC as home for a while until she returns to Latin America. She is an activist, spoken word poet , author, researcher and sexual health educator. She is a former radio show personality with WZMB “Good Vibrations Radio” and current podcaster on “Poetically Correct” and “Attempting to find da Answers”. Barber is the founder of Beyond Your Organization LLC a company dedicated to exploring identity through workshops involving spoken word poetry and uplifting unheard voices. Her book “Of Mics & Pens; Gods & Other College Courses” covers her unique brand of womanhood through haikus, long poems and more. Riah lives for the Spanish language, hiking ,QPOC, anthropology, Indian food, liberation , Earl Grey tea, thrifting , records, HIV prevention , yoga and open mic nights. She has her master’s in social behavioral & Community Health and has focused her efforts on bettering the health outcomes for women of color through storytelling with words or research.

FEATURING: LIV MCKEE

Liv McKee is a performing artist living in Troy, New York. Specializing in both dance and poetry, she has been commissioned to choreograph, create, and teach in many settings. Liv was a 2018 National Poetry Slam Team Piece Finalist, and has represented Albany at both the Individual World and Women of the World Poetry Slams. She was a semifinalist in this year’s Button Poetry Chapbook Contest, and a finalist in both the 2017 and 2018 DiBiase Poetry Contests. Her work is published or forthcoming in Winter Tangerine, A Whore’s Manifesto, Write About Now!, and her two self-released chapbooks honey at the corners of her mouths and BULB. In her free time you may find her talking to the moon and/or contemplating whorephobia, virginity, and anti-zionist white Jewishness. She hopes her poetry leaves you cut, bandaged, bathed, heartened.

College Night Open Mic! A Busboys and Poetry Event Every third Friday of the month. For two hours audiences can expect a diverse chorus of college students voices and a vast array of spoken word performers, open mic rookies, musicians, comedians and other talents from freshmen to graduate students. Each month, we feature a different college/university or an individual alumni artist. A great alternative to the college night life! Audience is open to all, college students are encouraged to share their work!
