Description:

NSO musician Glenn Donnellan (violin) and guest musician Matthew van Hoose (keyboard) collaborate with poets from the Beltway Poetry Slam in a synergistic performance where poetry will be performed over the music.

ABOUT THE NSO MEMBERS

Violinist

Glenn Donnellan began violin studies with his mother at age 4. After earning a BM at U of MN Mr. Donnellan played with the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Opera and many Broadway touring shows including Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story,Victor Victoria with Julie Andrews,Beauty and the Beast and the premiere of the Lion King, as well as recording for Prince and Janet Jackson. Since joining the National Symphony Orchestra in 1997, Mr. Donnellan has performed throughout the DMV in multiple venues. Most recently he started playing at MLB ballparks after he created the Electric Slugger™, an electric violin made out of a Louisville Slugger baseball bat, which he performs on in schools with his “Follow That Fiddle” program. His Electric Slugger has taken him around the country and the world, but his ultimate dream is to play the National Anthem in all 30 MLB stadiums in one season.

ABOUT THE POETS

Jael Benjamin is the 2018 DC Grand Slam Champion and a member of the 2018 Busboys and Poets' Beltway Poetry Slam Team. Originally from Atlanta, she has now laid roots in Washington D.C. and looks to be an unstoppable force and passionate speaker in poetry.

Rasheed Copeland is a native of Washington, DC. He is the author of The Book of Silence: Manhood As a Pseudoscience (Sergeant Press, 2015) and is a recipient of a 2016 and 2017 DC Commission of the Arts and Humanities Fellowship Award. He placed 2nd in the world at the 2015 Individual World Poetry Slam. He is currently studying English at the undergraduate level at Howard University. His work has been featured in online publications such as The Quarry and Public Pool. He has performed across the country and has been featured locally at renowned venues such as the Howard Theatre and the Lincoln Theatre.

NSO In Your Neighborhood is a community engagement initiative that provides free performances and educational activities. Through this community engagement initiative, the NSO ensures that all Washington, D.C. residents can participate in the arts, connects with audiences of all ages, and creates excitement and fosters an appreciation for live music.
